When the system's salt rejection rate and water production are found to decrease, the instrument should first be calibrated to avoid misjudgment due to instrumentation. These meters include conductivity meters, flow meters, pressure gauges, thermometers, and the like. Second, the recorded operational data is "normalized". Changes in temperature, influent TDS, recovery, age, and water flux can cause changes in salt rejection and water production. The standardized water production and desalination rate are calculated by calculation, and then compared with the initial operational data to confirm whether the system is faulty.

In the long-term operation of the reverse osmosis device, the surface of the membrane will gradually accumulate various pollutants such as colloids, microorganisms, inorganic scales, metal oxides and the like. The deposition of these materials on the surface of the membrane causes a decrease in the performance of the reverse osmosis device. In order to restore the performance of the membrane, the membrane is chemically cleaned and sterilized.
